I remember back when I was a kid, I’d get up at 4 AM Christmas morning and run into Mom and Dad’s room screaming, “Santa’s been here! Santa’s been here! And he murdered the dog!”
Of course we never had a dog, and I was using the suggestion that said imaginary dog had been slaughtered purely as a scare tactic to jolt my parents out of bed and into the living room so that I could get at my presents.
Needless to say, this technique only worked for one year. After that, their bedroom door remained steadfastly bolted and deaf to all cries until at least noon.
To fill these hours upon hours of anxious waiting, WPIX TV in New York used to show a little program known as Yule Log.
Yule Log was just that. It was a worn-out, scratchy old film of a large, homey fireplace hearth that burned commercial-free for however many hours it took for somebody at the station to actually come into work that day.
It used to keep me spellbound. One year I watched it for three straight hours to see if it would ever burn out. Coincidentally, that was also the year I discovered peppermint schnapps.
The kids today, however, expect more out of their holiday viewing than just a crackling log with some ancient, warbling, public domain recordings of Christmas carols played over it. They expect...
